Dull
Instagram without Reels, YouTube without Shorts – distraction-free social media.
What it does
Dull is an iOS app that acts as a custom browser for social media platforms, stripping out addictive features like Reels, Shorts, algorithmic feeds, and ads. It replaces the native Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, and Reddit apps with a controlled browsing experience. Users log into their existing accounts within Dull, and the app removes specific elements: Instagram Reels and Explore, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels and suggested content, X's For You tab and ads, and Reddit's Popular and suggested posts. DMs, search, subscriptions, and core feeds remain intact.
Beyond filtering, Dull provides eight adjustable controls: daily time limits per platform, friction gates (math problems or wait timers before opening an app), intent-based navigation (choose DMs, search, or subscriptions before entering), a live timer that changes color, grayscale mode per platform, usage statistics, home screen widgets, and a 24-hour delay or PIN lock to prevent changing settings impulsively.
Who it is for
Dull is designed for people who want to keep using social media for its useful parts (messaging, following specific accounts, searching) but want to eliminate the addictive, algorithm-driven feeds that lead to doomscrolling. It targets users who have tried other screen-time blockers but found them too easy to bypass, too nagging, or too restrictive. The app is for iOS users (16+) who are willing to pay $4/month for a focused, privacy-respecting tool. An Android version is on a waitlist.
Why it matters
Social media platforms are engineered to maximize engagement through infinite scroll, algorithmic recommendations, and short-form video. Dull addresses the core problem by removing these elements at the browser level, rather than relying on willpower or system-wide screen time limits. The app runs entirely on-device with no server, no account, and no data collection beyond anonymous analytics. This privacy-first approach means users' sessions and credentials never leave their phone. The solo developer maintains the app actively, fixing filters when platforms update, ensuring long-term reliability.
Launch signal
Dull was launched on the App Store and gained traction through a Show HN post on Hacker News. The website features user reviews from the App Store and Reddit, praising its effectiveness in reducing screen time and removing Reels. The app is funded by subscriptions ($4/month) with a 7-day free trial, no investors, and no growth team. The developer is transparent about the business model: the fee pays for ongoing maintenance.
Brand and naming
The name "Dull" is a clever, understated choice that positions the app as intentionally boring – the opposite of the stimulating, addictive nature of social media. It's memorable and easy to spell, and the tagline "social media. less of it." reinforces the value proposition. The brand voice is direct, honest, and slightly self-deprecating ("made by a guy who kept opening instagram for no reason"), which builds trust with a tech-savvy audience tired of overhyped productivity tools.
