HCB Mobile

Financial app built by 17 y/o, processing $6M/month

HCB Mobile

What it does

HCB Mobile is the official mobile app for HCB, a fiscal sponsorship platform that provides 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, bank accounts, donation collection, and debit cards to over 6,500 teenager-led nonprofits, clubs, and hackathons. The app allows users to manage their organization's finances on the go: track balances and transactions, accept in-person tap-to-pay donations (no extra hardware required), issue new debit cards and add them to Apple/Google Wallet, freeze or cancel cards, and upload receipts directly from their device.

Who it is for

HCB Mobile is built for the HCB community: primarily teenagers (ages 13-19) running robotics teams, hackathons, and nonprofit projects that improve their communities. It also supports hundreds of adult-run organizations such as mutual aid groups, open source projects, and community spaces. The app is designed to make financial management accessible to young people with limited resources and experience.

Why it matters

HCB is currently processing an average of $6 million per month (over $80 million in its lifetime). These funds are managed by young people who need a simple, mobile-friendly way to handle their organization's finances. HCB Mobile eliminates the need for desktop-only access, enabling real-time management from a smartphone. Features like tap-to-pay donations and instant card issuance reduce friction for in-person fundraising and spending. The app is fully open source on GitHub, reflecting HCB's commitment to transparency and community-driven development.

Launch signal

The app was announced on December 2, 2025, by Mohamad Mortada, a 17-year-old developer from the SF Bay Area. It is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. The project involved over 250 hours of development work and required obtaining restricted entitlements from Apple and Google for tap-to-pay terminal provisioning and push provisioning (adding cards to wallets). The app is built with Expo (React Native) and is open source on GitHub.

Brand and naming

HCB stands for Hack Club Bank, the fiscal sponsorship program of Hack Club. The name "HCB Mobile" is straightforward and descriptive, clearly indicating it is the mobile companion to the existing HCB platform. The branding emphasizes youth empowerment and community service, positioning the app as a tool for "teenagers trying to do good." The tagline "built by 17 y/o, processing $6M/month" highlights both the youthful creator and the significant scale of the platform, creating a compelling narrative of teenage capability and impact.
