Mathpad
Physical keypad for typing math symbols at the speed of thought
What it does
Mathpad is a specialized physical keypad that makes typing mathematical equations as simple as typing regular text. With over 100 mathematical symbols and Greek letters at your fingertips, it eliminates the need to hunt for symbols in clunky pickers, copy-paste from the web, or memorize obscure alt-codes. Just press a key, and the symbol appears instantly. The keypad supports multiple output modes: plaintext symbols, LaTeX codes, Microsoft Office Equation Editor symbols, and LibreOffice Equation Editor codes, switchable with a key press. It is fully open source (hardware and software) and customizable—users can add their own symbols via simple copy-paste or advanced firmware modifications. The firmware is built on QMK, and the keypad uses hot-swappable Gateron KS-33 mechanical switches.
Who it is for
Mathpad is designed for anyone who frequently types mathematical equations: students writing lab reports, educators creating lesson plans, scientists documenting research, and engineers solving real-world problems. It works on Windows, macOS (Mojave 10.14.4 and up), and Linux, and is compatible with applications like Microsoft Word, LaTeX editors, Discord, VSCode, and more. However, it only supports Latin-based keyboard layouts (QWERTY, AZERTY, DVORAK) and does not support non-Latin layouts (e.g., Greek, Russian, Korean, Chinese). On Windows, a small background application must be running, which may be an issue on strictly managed systems.
Why it matters
Typing mathematical symbols is notoriously inefficient. Users often resort to copy-pasting from the web, digging through symbol pickers, or memorizing obscure alt-codes—all of which break flow and waste time. Mathpad addresses this by providing a dedicated, tactile input device that puts over 100 symbols directly under the user's fingers. Its open-source nature and customizability ensure it can adapt to individual workflows. The keypad is compact (10 × 7.5 cm) with a solid anodized aluminum body and USB-C connectivity, making it a durable and portable tool for improving productivity in math-intensive tasks.
Launch signal
Mathpad launched on Crowd Supply and was fully funded in September 2025, raising $18,924 from 125 backers against a $1 goal (symbolic). It is now in stock and ships within three business days. The project has 10 updates, with the latest in December 2025 confirming units have reached backers and arrived at Mouser's warehouse. The team, Summa Cogni, is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has a track record of other hardware projects on Crowd Supply.
Brand and naming
The name "Mathpad" is straightforward and descriptive, clearly communicating the product's purpose: a keypad for mathematics. It is memorable and easy to search for. The branding emphasizes speed and simplicity, with the tagline "Type equations at the speed of thought." The product is positioned as a productivity tool for students and professionals, leveraging open-source values and mechanical keyboard enthusiast culture. The anodized aluminum body and hot-swappable switches appeal to the premium keyboard community.
